Tsitsipas and Zverev lost at the ATP Cup

Stefanos Tsitsipas lost to Denis Shapovalov 6-7, 6-7 and Alexander Zverev lost 6-4, 6-7, 2-6 to Alex De Minaur.

Shapovalov’s victory over Tsitsipas helped Canada become the first team to win a team match in the history of the ATP Cup. In the remaining single match, Felix Auger-Aliassime won easily against Michail Pervolarakis 6-1, 6-3. Shapovalov and Aliassime also defeated Pervolarakis – Petros Tsitsipas (younger brother Stefanos Tsitsipas) 6-2, 6-3 to help Canada beat Greece 3-0.

Tsitsipas only faced a break-point in the match, compared to Shapovalov’s four threats. But Shapovalov is more brave in two tie-break series. The Canadian won 8-6 in the first series of brain-weight matches, before scoring four points in a row to win 7-3 in a tie-break series of two.

Another pair of players witnessed the competition of two Next-Gen players, Alexander Zverev and Alex De Minaur. Zverev started well with a 6-4 win in set one, but lost 3-7 in a tie-break set of two. After this set, the German player created an offensive image by smashing the racket as soon as the camera showed him close-up.

Zverev hit the racket after making 7 double errors

Zverev surrendered in a set of three and lost 2-6, contributing to Germany’s 0-3 defeat to Australia. In this pair match, Nick Kyrgios beat Jan-Lennard Struff 6-4, 7-6 in the Australian tennis match with up to 20 ace shots. Kyrgios, in turn, raised $2,800 for the victims of the wildfire in his home town.

The biggest surprise on the first day belonged to Bulgaria. Grigor Dimitrov beat Daniel Evans after three sets to help the home team equalize the score with England. Later, Bulgarian player and compatriot Alexandar Lazarov defeated two double experts Jamie Murray and Joe Salisbury 7-6, 6-7, 11-9. Bulgaria, thanks to that, beat England 2-1.

The second day of the tournament, January 4, promises to be exciting when Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal play in the afternoon. Djokovic (Serbia) meets Kevin Anderson (South Africa) – the player who lost to him in the Wimbledon final in 2018, and Nadal (Spain) met Nikoloz Basilashvili (Georgia).

The ATP Cup 2020 has 24 teams participating in, which are divided into six groups to compete in a circle. Team matches will consist of two single matches and one double match. In particular, the two strongest players in each team, based on the ATP hierarchy, will meet in the second men’s singles match. The top six teams and the second best-performing teams will reach the quarter-finals.
